Family Guidance

Partnering With Teachers and Specialists

Children are supported best when parents, teachers, and specialists can share information without blame, confusion, or competing plans.

Start with shared observations

Every adult sees part of the picture. Bringing those observations together helps the team understand the child more fully.

  • Share what works at home and what works at school.
  • Name situations where the child is most successful.
  • Use examples instead of labels whenever possible.

Keep communication usable

Families and educators are busy. Communication works best when it is clear, predictable, and connected to the plan.

  • Agree on how updates will be shared.
  • Focus on one or two priority goals at a time.
  • Write down changes so everyone knows what to try next.

Respond when strategies stall

A strategy may need adjustment if it only works in one setting or stops helping over time.

  • Ask what changed in the routine or environment.
  • Look for patterns before replacing the whole plan.
  • Make one adjustment at a time so progress is easier to understand.
