Supporting Communication at Home
Communication grows through everyday moments. Families do not need perfect activities; they need small, repeatable ways to invite connection.
Start with daily routines
Meals, bath time, getting dressed, car rides, and play can all become communication opportunities.
- Use short, clear language during familiar routines.
- Pause long enough for your child to respond in their own way.
- Name what your child is looking at, reaching for, or enjoying.
Offer choices
Choices help children practice communication with a real purpose.
- Offer two visible options when possible.
- Accept pointing, looking, gestures, sounds, signs, or words as communication.
- Repeat the child's choice clearly so the language is modeled.
Notice more than words
Communication includes body language, facial expressions, sounds, movement, and shared attention.
- Watch for patterns in how your child asks, refuses, or shows interest.
- Respond to attempts, even when they are not words yet.
- Share examples with teachers or providers so support can be consistent.
How Milestone can help
